Good morning!
Let’s have a tarot chat. I am a teacher by trade, and I am trying to translate that into coaching and other guidance in the spiritual realm. Oftentimes, the teacher is seen as The Hierophant, one who holds the knowledge and power to lead others. In my lived experience of being a teacher, we are not The Hierophant. A true teacher, a teacher whose profession is about heart and not ego will feel more attuned to the Page of Swords.
A good teacher, a teacher who is in it to help and not for ego or power tripping, is a forever student. Truly, we love learning, implementing new tactics, etc. Not all of us love being a student in the traditional sense (me, it’s me. I hate being in school), but learning and intellectual stimulation are it for those of us who fit this particular brand of teacher.
The Page of Swords is a card of learning. It is the perpetual student card. If you are drawn to this card it is because you are always seeking to learn more, know more, experience more. Knowledge is your passion.
Why even bring this up? Well, one, I think it’s an interesting spin on tarot archetypes and information that I don’t see very often. Two, I think this conversation brings up an importance in power dynamics, especially as we become acquainted with dictatorship in 2025.
The Hierophant is the old school teacher, the teacher that barks orders and demands perfection and obedience. There is little questioning happening of the speaker at the pulpit.
The Page of Swords is the teacher that looks to the classroom and sees the value of each of the students’ lives and experiences. Each one of those students comes to us with valuable knowledge and information that we get to collect, learn about, and then synthesize into data that can be used to help propel them forward.
If you are looking to guide, tutor, coach, teach, I think it is imperative that you look at your own internalized views on power. Are you going into teaching because you know best and want control of 20-110 students at a time (depending on your grade)? Or are you going in because you truly feel like you can help guide and lead, that you can honor each child’s lived experience especially if it differs greatly from yours? We all have biases, and we have to be able to check those.
If you are looking to work with adults, know that you have even less ability as Hierophant. You must be the Page. You need to stay open, curious, and not patronize or condescend. If this is a card that comes up a lot for you, I’d encourage you to ask yourself some questions. Am I always meant to be a student? Can I bring my knowledge into a position of leadership while also maintaining the humility of student? Do I enjoy teaching and learning along side others? What biases do I have? How do they present? What do I need to do to become aware and change my reaction?
All of the spiritual accounts that I really admire are always learning. They teach. They guide, but they don’t stagnate. They are always learning, expanding, leaning into inspiration just like the Page of Swords. They are the spiritual teachers I look to emulate as I go.
Do you connect with this card? How do you feel about being a learner/student? How do you feel about leading and guiding others? How would your schooling been different had you had more page of swords teachers rather than hierophants?
Wishing you well this week! May your life offer what you need in this moment.
With love,
Aventurine ✨
This post is SO GOOD! I love the challenge you present to ppl to remove ego and power seeking from their guidance and teaching
I love your post, and will be planning to read it a few times. I'm the type of teacher (not my current role, but it's deeply me) that identifies with the page, and definitely want that energy.
