HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PISCEANS!!!
This upcoming season is for intuition, dreaming, and emotional intelligence. Get very up and personal with your journaling/creative practice.
I have been thinking about the constant (and I mean by me too) push towards journaling. This is obviously my Aquarius Season brain talking because we’re about to hit some justice issues. But there are many, many people who can’t journal due to disability, etc. If you are able to journal, and it is something that you enjoy, definitely get up close and personal with it, but what about for those who want that spiritual release but writing or voicing isn’t as easily accessible? Up until this school year, I was working with highly impacted disabled students, and writing and verbalizing were not within their abilities most of the time. They were young, 3rd to 5th grade, so I am not sure about their spiritual development, but I keep thinking about those for whom journaling just isn’t an option. What is another way people can express themselves?
When I think back to my beloved students, I think to their movements, their stims. Oftentimes, their stims would lead them into an almost trance like state. It allowed for that excess energy and cloudiness to escape and release. For those of us who are more able-bodied, we can think of this as dance or intentional exercise. For those of us who are less mobile, this could be rocking back and forth, leg jiggling, etc. to help us release and clear our heads.
I think about the expression of music and the reception of music. I had so many musically inclined students. I am not sure if the words were important or if the notes/rhythms were what moved them more, or maybe a combination of both. Again, my students were not very expressive, and it was hard to get a read on these more nuanced, private experiences. An alternative to journaling can be composing music if you’re so inclined or even listening to music and picking up on the messages you receive from them.
Finally, I think about color. I have very strong feelings and reactions to color. I love coloring (not drawing), organizing by color, and just scrolling through colors. I think expression through scribbled color, collaged color, or even just the acknowledgement of color and how it feels within us (expressed via music, movement, etc) could also be a good alternative.
I love journaling. I have not been able to consistently access my journaling brain for well over a year now. I miss it, but I am realizing that I might need to lean into other forms of expression and processing.
Did you make it this far? What does this have to do with Pisces Season? Well, honestly, I’m not sure, but I think that emotional regulation and finding that for yourself is a very personal moment. It’s not always going to be journaling. It’s not always going to be sitting by a tree or taking a bath. Sometimes it’s going to be sex, loud music, or conversely complete sensory deprivation. Sometimes it’s going to be talking it out, other times screeching or humming. Let’s try to stay away from the self harming tactics. If you’re a picker or a biter (I’m both!), consider looking into fidgets that allow for that same input that won’t hurt your body.
What do you think? Am I overthinking? Are any of these alternatives speaking to you? Do you have any to add?
I am going to get off my SpEd teacher soapbox. My beloved Pisces, I hope you have a wonderful birthday! Everyone else, stay safe out here. Remember to breathe and ground as we take this last plunge into darkness before spring.
