Since March and the Virgo Full Moon, I have been offering free readings on the Sassyverse Pod IG page. It has been a joy, to be honest. I love reading for others, and it is a great way to get to know people, to start conversations, to build community. Tarot is a fantastic way to build community and break the ice, I’ve found. Even my partner who is not into the spirituality aspect of life loves to bring up my tarot practice to his friends and colleagues. It gives me (a very anxious and shy human) a chance to get in on a conversation without feeling paralyzed by the social etiquette of new people. To each of you who has allowed me to be part of your full moon journeys, THANK YOU.
I have been wanting to do a themes post or mention or explanation or something for a while now. Every time I do these readings, there is a collective theme or three. Now that my Substack is up and running, I am excited to put those observations here. This format gives me a lot more space to really dig in deep. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
The first theme that I want to talk about is The Hermit. This card represents Virgo who is known for being reflective, reserved, quiet, strategic, and a bit of a loner. There is this theme of needing to reflect and go deep rather than getting wild and running from one thing to another as Gemini (sun) and Sagittarius (full moon) tend to do. To reach your goals, your dreams, the state of self you want: Slow it down. Reflect. Observe. Does this mean isolate? No, but it does mean that finding time for self is important.
Both of these Hermit cards have some heavy energy around them, but there is also this hopefulness, this sense of joy, of playfulness, of contentedness. In order to reach those more positive, more desirable states of being, we must work through the change, the decision, the conflict that is consuming us.
The next theme is NEW BEGINNINGS. The Fool came up a couple of times to really bring this theme home, but even so, there were page cards, Judgement, Two and Three of Wands. Collectively, we are entering a new period, a new chapter, a new season. We are 3-4 days away from a season shift, the longest day of the year, the first day of Summer. We are changing seasons. We are also entering a new lunar cycle tomorrow: New Moon in Gemini.
These Fool cards both have people contemplating. They are thinking. They are reflecting. The Five of Cups is a card of processing and grief. That energy is one of shifting out of the heaviness and knowing you have the strength to get through it to start fresh, to start without that burden, even when that load feels like a security blanket. This second fool card has the Seven of Pentacles. He is strategic. He is planning, but he is not present. He is not present in the abundance he has already cultivated. I think that in our society, especially with social media, we are constantly being pushed into productivity and moving to the next goal post rather than having the chance to sit, observe, relish our accomplishments, and enjoy what we already have. In order to start on a new adventure, a new project, we need to be present in the here and now with gratitude for what we have done.
A disclaimer: I struggle a lot with my own accomplishments. I am the embodiment of the Seven of Earth. I never want to see what I have done, what I have accomplished, what I have succeeded in completing. It makes me uncomfortable, but it is an important skill to be able to see and acknowledge and process that which you’ve been able to do.
New beginnings are coming. They’re on the horizon. Look forward to them, dream about them, but stay present, and process through the hurdles so that your new venture can flourish.
This next one is the Six of Wands: pride, leadership, success!! In this card, we are feeling out Leo energy. We are feeling ourselves, our power, our own abilities. I feel like the Six of Wands combined with the new beginnings energy of The Fool tells us all that we need to believe in ourselves. Find the balance between pride and ego. You can be proud of yourself without falling into egotistical mindsets. Finding this balance may be the cure we (I) need to get beyond that Puritan way of thinking that acknowledgement of our accomplishments is bad, wrong, that living humbly and with humility means never once feeling pride in yourself.
I love the pairing of the Six of Wands with the Ace of Cups (hello, new beginning) because it reminds us to find that balance of pride and gratitude. Be ready to step into your own power, into a leadership role within your life, and when you feel like it’s too much, come back to yourself with The Hermit. Reflect on why you feel so overwhelmed, why the imposter syndrome is back.
One last theme: Justice. Here, we are looking at balance and getting back to a place of balance. If you have fallen off the path of being engaged in matters that are important to you because you got burnt out, figure out the balance, the self care to be able to stay engaged while also remaining active in other parts of your life. This could be sending a (1) letter or postcard to your representatives/senators/city council each month. This could be making a (1) phone call to your elected officials each month to fight for causes you care about. This could be doing one weekend of water, food, or hygiene product distro to your houseless neighbors. This could be sitting in on one school board meeting a month so that they see community members there and know they’re being watched. This could be attending a conference such as All Born (In) once a year so you know what your disabled community needs and is doing.
If these suggestions are all way too many spoons for you, that’s ok. Do what you can. I think reading books, listening to audiobooks, audio essays, signing up for BIPOC Patreons, and things in that realm can be a good place to start or a good place to revert back to when you need more rest. Consuming the information, then taking the time to reflect and see how to put that information into practice is important as well.
A couple of book recommendations while we’re here:
All of these are linked to Amazon. If you have a local bookshop you’d like to support o a BIPOC owned bookstore you’d like top support, please shop there.
Reflect in what needs to happen, take the leap, and have the faith in yourself and your abilities. Balance is key in everything. These are the major themes of the collective full moon readings this month. Did this resonate for you? Let me know!
The New Moon is tomorrow. If you are interested in a 6-deck oracle reading for the new moon, contact me! These are the same readings that I do for myself every month. The reading includes cards from 6 decks, a printable PDF with interpretations for each card, and an image for each card that you can cut out, collage with, or just keep as a mini altar!
